History

On May 2, 2000 something happened. The US brought all of its new, million dollar satellites online. This was called the "Blue Switch" and it allowed for accurate and quick GPS readings to be transferred to handheld devices around the world. GPS enthusiasts were overjoyed. GPS forums exploded just hours after the blue switch with ideas of how to use the new technology. On May 3, Dave Ulmer had the idea to hide a box, post the coordinates online and have people try to find the box. A new hobby had been born. This first "GPS Stash Hunt" box was a hit. People all around the world began following in Dave's footsteps. As more and more caches were made, people realized that something had to be made to organize it all. So Jeremy Irish made Geocaching.com. Over the years, the hobby has become mroe and more sophisticated. You can read more about the history of Geocaching here.

Hiding a Geocache

Hiding a geocache is actually quite simple. Read all about the process here.

Finding a Geocache

Now, the fun part. Search the website or the app's map for a geocache near you. Once you have decided on which one you want to find, hit the navigate button. Now, get to the geocache. Once you reach ground zero, the spot where the coordinates point to, start looking! Once you've found the cache, sign your name on the logbook and if there is SWAG, or trade items, then trade! Have fun and stay safe on the hunt!
