Geocaching Acronyms and Terms

Geocaching has been around for over 20 years. When something this big has been around for that long, a whole new language of acronyms and terms show up. There are a LOT and they might be different around the world, but here are all of them I know:

  • FTF - First to Find
  • DNF - Did not Find
  • TFTC - Thanks For The Cache
  • TFTH - Thank For The Hide
  • TOTT - Tool Of The Trade
  • TN - Took Nothing
  • TNLN - Took Nothing Left Nothing
  • TNLNSL - Took Nothing Left Nothing Signed Log
  • SWAG - Trade Items
  • BYOP - Bring Your Own Pen
  • CITO - Cache In Trash Out
  • D/T - Difficulty / Terrain
  • GZ - Ground Zero
  • CO - Cache Owner
  • GC - GeoCoin
  • LN - Left Nothing
  • NM - Needs Maintenance
  • P&G - Park and Grab
  • PI/PO - Poison Ivy/Poison Oak
  • QEF - Quick Easy Find
  • SL - Signed Log
  • SOOP - Something Out Of Place
  • SPOR - Suspicious Pile Of Rocks
  • TB - Travel Bug
  • UPR - Unusual Pile of Rocks
  • WF - Wheelchair Friendly
  • Cache - Short for "Geocache"

Explanations of Some of These Acronyms

  • FTF: Usually used to denote that you were the first person to find the cache.
  • DNF: A very common term used to show that you couldn't find the geocache.
  • SWAG: The items that you take out and put into the geocache when you find it.
  • GZ: The actual place where the geocache is hidden, usually a circle 10 feet in diameter around the noted coordinates.
  • TB: An item officially made by Groundspeak that you can buy at the Geocaching.com store. It moves around the world from cache to cache, waiting for the next person to find it and move it.
  • P&G/QEF: Used to show that the cache is very simple to find or solve withing 5 minutes.
  • SOOP/UPR/SPOR: Used to show that something is out of place, used by the hider or the person logging the find to help others.
