15 Tips For Beginner Geocachers

  1.  Always BYOP. Whenever you go out for geocaches, make sure to have your own pen with you. Some large caches may have some pens inside, but you never know when you will run into a micro.
  2. Take your friends geocaching. Everything is better with friends, especially geocaching. Maybe bring along some muggle friends and inspire them to start geocaching?!
  3. When you get within 10 feet of the cache, just put down your phone and start looking around. Most of the time, the coordinates aren't all that accurate, and GPS doesn't always work that well, especially with a weak connection.
  4. Bring cool swag. Chances are, you're going to find some pretty cool swag in a geocache. You should always replace swag with something of equal or greater value, so don't throw in a leaf and call it a day.
  5. Don't underestimate a well-stocked geobag. Bring the essentials, AND your favorite TOTT.
  6. Give yourself time. Some geocaches may be far away or they might take long to find. Give yourself plenty of time and never rush. You wouldn't want to worry the owner with a false DNF!
  7. Bring extra, empty logs just in case you come across a water-logged geocache.
  8. Write good logs in the app. Describe your experience and thank the CO for their cache. You don't want to be the one person who only writes TFTC in their log.
  9. Use the hints and description to help you along the way. They may also contain an interesting story or funny jokes.
  10. If you really can't find a cache, log a DNF to alert the CO that there may be a problem with the cache.
  11. If you are into hiding caches, bring a loaded micro with you in case you find a cool spot to hide it.
  12. If you are having trouble finding the cache, look at previous logs that might contain a clue.
  13. Don't spend a ton of money on gadgets and what-not at the beginning of your geocaching career. Use things you can find around the house and at dollar stores.
  14. Always be prepared. Bring a first aid kit, comfy hiking boots, and whatever you think you will need based on the cache and the area you are visiting.
  15. Remember to always have fun!!!
I hope these will come in handy for you along your adventures!!! Have fun and stay safe!
